Some perspective please

Today is about perspective. Different kinds of perspectives.

Like, how much is 20 acres? How fast is too fast for planning the space? Because it seems like too much work for some, will it be too much work for us?

It’s all in your perspective – or OUR perspective in this case:)

One acre is 43, 560 square feet, or 4046.8 square meters. So 20 acres is 871, 200 square feet or 80937 square meters.

On one acre of land you can produce 20,000 to 30,000 apples. So my thought of planting a few acres of apples just got a reality check! PERSPECTIVE!

One acre can produce between 14,000 and 24,000 ears of corn!

You get the point. We are not big eaters in our home. By any standard, this is too much food for us to plant, to store, to eat…. So I am designing and re-designing plans for this land. I don’t intend to set anything in stone since I want this land to be an extension of our needs, wants and dreams.

Some things we DO want but may take a while to achieve. Every single addition to our homestead will be done on a tight budget. So our WANTS:

  • A pond for swimming and perhaps for fishing
  • Free range animals that will help prepare our land for planting
  • Arbours to rest and get shade when we are out working the land
  • A kitchen garden – for us
  • A market garden – to market!

And lastly, in a perfect world, all of this would be pretty to look at. Now perspective: that little red barn is 25 X 90 feet or 7.5 X 27.5 meters. The house has a large double garage. The grey square around the house is actually a really nice sized yard. It’s large enough to host its own gardens, deck, bbq pit, lawn bowling…whatever you like.

The possibilities are endless with the right perspective! Oh and by the way, looks like we might be moving within 8 weeks. Will keep you posted!
