Our sweet little eggs have been in the incubator for a week now. Between 6 and 10 days, they should be checked for viability. Katie took out our brand new candling tool. Very disappointed! She changed the batteries, jiggled and wiggled it. Nothing. It won’t light.

She tried using a flashlight. Lizzie assisted, but to no avail. After checking on a few of the paler eggs, it seems that we will have to wait for the next candler to be shipped. One egg appears fertile, another, not sure, and yet another seems a misfire. The darker shelled eggs are impossible to check with the flashlight.
We may receive the new candler tomorrow. If we can see results, I will try to update you. The eggs that are not viable need to be removed from the incubator as they may explode and damage the fertile eggs. That being said, I thought we should keep all the eggs in until we can be sure, even though some seem to not have chicks.

On a happier note, we got to see our farm this week. This was our last chance to visit before the move. I brought in a well water system company to quote us on upgrading the system that is currently in place. It will hurt but not as much as anticipated. That’s great! We also got to meet the current owners. This wasn’t something I necessarily wanted to do, but it turns out I’m really glad. They obviously love the place and are sorry to leave. It made me want to take care of the property even more.
There’s water in the barn!! All the snow from this winter is causing flooding the one side of the exterior walls and has infiltrated a few stalls. This is not what I wanted to see but at least we know what needs to be done before next winter when animals will be living there.
So we wait for the new candler. The three of us are really hoping on a good hatch rate from our 14 little eggs. It will be very sad if we don’t succeed at all. But we are one week closer to moving!
Will keep you posted on the eggs!
